PROGRAM OVERVIEW

The Hogg Therapy Pediatrics Internship Program provides undergraduate and graduate students with hands-on exposure in an outpatient setting. Through mentorship from experienced team members, interns gain valuable insight into clinic operations, professional communication, teamwork, and the systems that support high-quality pediatric care.

There are currently three types of positions available: Therapy Internships (unpaid), Admin Internships (unpaid), or Learning Center Internships (paid). Read more about each role below!

The Therapy Internship Program is designed for students pursuing careers in speech-language pathology, occupational therapy, or physical therapy and typically ranges from 150–200 hours based on student availability and program requirements. Through mentorship from experienced therapists, interns gain valuable insight into pediatric therapy practices, clinic operations, interdisciplinary collaboration, and family-centered care.

The Administrative Internship Program provides undergraduate and graduate students with meaningful, hands-on experience in the administrative operations of a pediatric healthcare organization. We intentionally select students who are interested in healthcare administration, business, human resources, marketing, communications, or a related field.

LEARNING CENTER INTERNSHIP

The Learning Center Internship Program provides college students and recent graduates with meaningful, hands-on experience supporting children in an educational setting. The program is designed to provide dependable assistance to the Learning Center, allow us to serve more students, and create a pathway for interns who may be interested in future employment with HTP.

Telling some tall tales about catching big fish during speech with Mrs. Taylor 🤣🐷 They’ve been working on that tricky /sh/ sound together! 🐠 For some kids, “fish” can sound more like “fiss.” Why? Because /S/ is an easier, more familiar sound, while /SH/ requires the tongue to move farther back and the lips to round just a bit differently. Who knew drawing letters on a dry-erase table could be part of speech therapy? 💬 ST Mrs. Maya has been working with this friend on connecting letters to their sounds — like seeing “b” and knowing it represents /b/, also known as sound-letter correspondence. 👍 This skill is an important bridge between speech, language, and early literacy. 📝📚 Even if their first answer is wrong, the way a child responds and self-corrects can give the SLP valuable information about how they’re processing what they see and hear.👀🦻 Speech therapy is about so much more than just “saying sounds correctly!” ❤️ #speechtherapy #speechlanguagepathologist #hoggtherapypediatrics

The words we use around mealtimes can make a bigger impact than we realize. 💕 We were reminded of this recently through a pretty amazing feeding therapy moment. A couple of weeks ago, this friend would ONLY eat McDonald’s fries — never trying waffle fries or any other category ❌ Yesterday, he and his SLP, Mrs. Megan, heated up curly fries in the air fryer — seasoning and all! 😍 And guess what? He liked them! He and Mrs. Megan even passed the curly fries around to other kiddos at the clinic and encouraged them to try them, too. 🥹 That’s the kind of progress that can happen when we give kids opportunities to explore food without pressure, celebrate the small steps, and leave room for curiosity. 🔎 When a child hears themselves described as a “picky eater” over and over, that label can start to feel like part of who they are. And as parents and caregivers, we are some of their most trusted people. What we say to and about them matters.🗣️ So instead of focusing on what they won’t eat, let’s look for the positives we can celebrate: ✨ “You’re being so brave trying that!” ✨ “You’re doing a great job chewing!” ✨ “You’re exploring a new food!” ✨ “You’re listening to your body!” And if your child doesn’t like something? That’s okay, too. We can make room for preferences without making them feel like a problem. Mealtimes don’t have to be perfect, and neither do we. Feeding challenges can take time, patience, and support — and you don’t have to figure it all out on your own. ✨Milestone Moment ✨This sweet friend got his first haircut and didn’t shed a single tear! 🎉✂️ For some kids, something as simple as having their hair cut can feel incredibly overwhelming. While playing the xylophone outside, Mrs. Georgia asks this friend to describe what he’s doing. Instead of simply asking, “What are you doing?”, she makes it playful: “Caleb is… eating bugs!” 🐛 or “Caleb is… going to sleep!” 😴 These playful moments create opportunities to listen, process language, and practice responding—all without making therapy feel like a test. Sometimes progress isn’t an immediate verbal response. An “obstacle course” can be doing SO much more in OT than you might realize! 🤯 It might look like this kiddo is simply working on balance and coordination, but an OT can use the activity to work on motor planning, body awareness, visual-motor skills, attention, following directions, sequencing, sensory processing, executive functioning—and so much more. ⚖️✨“Step on green!” isn’t just about finding the green item that’s next in the sequence. What an incredible show of talent we saw this morning! 🎭 The performers took the stage with confidence and showed off their skills with big smiles. We’ve loved seeing your stories roll in over the past couple weeks and wanted to share one of our own, thanks to therapists Lauren & Maya and their friend Tiffany. ❤️ Last week, OT Ms. Lauren and ST Ms. Maya accompanied Tiffany on a HUGE adventure, attending the Special Needs Camp of Kentucky for activities, friendship, and growth 💕 Headquartered in Bath County, SNCKI is free to attend, with nearly 100 campers enrolled this year! Ms. Lauren shared her thoughts with the HTP team when she got home: “The other campers welcomed [Tiffany] with open arms, and she made so many new friends…A space where 76 teens/adults with disabilities of all kinds were free to just be them and make those connections with each other while having tons of fun. We have had moments that were trickier to navigate, but we did it together.” One of the nights was family and community night, featuring a group dance and a talent showcase. 🪩Lauren said, “The amount of love and support in the gym was out of this world. For her mom to see that, to know that we’ve got her girl no matter what, means more than any treatment code or note I could ever write. She is already asking when she gets to come back…and even told her mom to ‘buy a new house at camp’😂 If you are not already, follow Special Needs Connections of Kentucky, Inc on facebook. They are doing such AMAZING things for our community here and deserve so much support.” 🙌 We couldn’t agree more! We’re sharing an occupational therapy success story from OT Mrs. Abby today! 🙌 Meet Grayson! When he first started occupational therapy, everyday life felt hard. He was experiencing significant picky eating, struggled with daily routines and transitions, and had a difficult time managing big emotions. Since then, Grayson has put in so much hard work. Through OT, he has built confidence, strengthened his self-regulation skills, and learned to take on new and challenging tasks with courage. Every small step has added up to something truly amazing! One of the biggest reasons for Grayson’s success has been the incredible partnership with his parents. They fully embraced therapy beyond the clinic by consistently practicing strategies at home through his Home Exercise Program (HEP). Their dedication, encouragement, and willingness to try new approaches have made all the difference. Today, Grayson is trying new foods every week, navigating daily routines with greater independence, and enjoying more successful, joyful moments with his family. His growth is a wonderful reminder of what can happen when a determined child, committed caregivers, and a supportive therapy team work together. 🎉Congratulations, Grayson!
