At HTP, we believe every child deserves a voice, and our AAC (Augmentative and Alternative Communication) Spotlight Series was created to celebrate exactly that. Led by our dedicated SLP and AAC Specialist, Mrs. Taylor, this campaign has highlighted real stories from families discovering new ways to connect, communicate, and grow through AAC. Mrs.Taylor began this series to empower caregivers, spread awareness, and show that every communication journey is meaningful, from the earliest attempts to the biggest breakthroughs. 🙌♥️💬 As we wrap up this series, we’re excited to share our final story, one that perfectly captures the heart, hope, and progress behind AAC! This is the story of a bright and determined 7-year-old boy who has been discovering the power of communication through his AAC journey. Diagnosed with Level 3 autism and nonverbal, he uses a speech device along with sign language—and his progress has been remarkable! He began using AAC within the last year, it has already opened up a whole new world of connection and understanding. With guidance from his therapist, Mrs. Morgan, and support from his family, he’s learning to communicate his wants and needs clearly. One of his first big breakthroughs was being able to choose exactly what he wanted to eat or drink throughout the day—a huge step toward independence and confidence! Reinforcing his choices through AAC has helped him understand that his voice matters and that what he communicates has real meaning. For this family, success with AAC means less frustration, more communication, and more smiles. They’re celebrating every win—big and small—as their child continues to grow in confidence and expression. Their message to other families beginning their AAC journey: “Trust the process. It can be frustrating at first and it’s a brand-new world, but once you start to see the little and big victories with AAC, it’s all worth it.” We’re so proud of this amazing communicator and the incredible progress he’s made. It’s time for another AAC success story!📱🌟 Meet Mikey-J, a joyful and resilient 4-year-old who is already showing incredible progress with his Tobii Dynavox AAC device! Diagnosed with autism, Mikey-J began using his speech generating device around a year and a half ago, and what a difference it has made.👏 One of the first breakthrough moments came when Mikey-J used his device to say “bite bite”—letting his family know he was hungry. Before AAC, this would often lead to tears and frustration as his family tried to guess what he needed. That small but powerful phrase opened a big door to clearer communication and more peaceful daily routines. With the consistent support of his therapists Mrs. Megan, Mrs. Taylor, and Mrs. Emily, and a lot of encouragement at home, Mikey-J is now using his AAC device to express his basic needs—a huge step toward independence and connection. His family’s message for other parents just beginning their AAC journey? “Don’t get discouraged. The more you work with your child, the more they will like it and be willing to use it!” ♥️ We are so proud of Mikey-J and the progress he’s making. Diagnosed as autistic and nonverbal, Darren is an AAC communicator and uses some sign language. Darren began his AAC journey around 6 months ago—and the growth since then has been truly inspiring. One of Darren’s first big breakthroughs came during feeding therapy, when he used his AAC to choose a body part—like his nose or lips—to touch a new food to. With the support of his occupational therapist, Mrs. Jen, he even started counting food items using the number keyboard, making the experience fun and engaging. That moment showed just how much potential his AAC device had to support not only communication, but learning and confidence too.♥️ With daily encouragement at home and the steady support of his therapists, Darren now uses his AAC to express emotions, participate in classroom activities, and make choices throughout the day. He loves the number and letter keyboard, and thanks to his AAC, he can now identify all his letters, colors, and even write numbers up to 20!👏 Darren’s family wants other parents starting their AAC journey to know: “It may feel overwhelming at first, but it’s so worth it. Stick with it and trust the process—watching your child communicate without frustration is the best reward.” We’re so proud of Darren and all that he’s accomplished. It’s time for another AAC success story!📱🌟 This week, we’re thrilled to celebrate Eli, a 4-year-old AAC user who is already making meaningful strides on his communication journey! Diagnosed as autistic and non-verbal, Eli has been using his AAC device for just under a year now — and in that short time, he’s started using it to express real needs and emotions. Whether he’s telling his mom when he’s hungry, choosing his favorite foods and drinks, or letting his therapist know what he’s feeling or what he wants to play with, Eli is learning that his voice matters. 🙌🗣️ One unforgettable moment? Eli walked up to his mom, smiled, and pressed the “I love you” button several times—then gave her a big hug. Moments like these are what AAC is all about: connection, joy, and being heard. His progress has been supported by dedicated therapists, Mrs. Taylor and Ms. Maya, who helped with the insurance and paperwork process and who help encourage functional use of his device during sessions — and his family has been right there modeling and encouraging AAC use at home.
