Happy Halloween from HTP to you and yours!🐷🎃 Princess Donut here to give you some guidelines for safe candy consumption to decrease your child’s risks of choking.😻🍬 The American Academy of Pediatrics does not recommend candy for children under the age of 2 and recommends steering clear of high choke risk candies until at least the age of 4. 🛑👶 High choke risk candies: 🍬Hard, round candies like Gobstoppers, Lemonheads, Warheads, or Smarties 🧸Gummy candy like Sour Patch Kids, gummy worms, or gummy bears 🍫Any candies with pieces or whole nuts like Snickers, Mr. Goodbar, or Baby Ruth 🍭Very sticky or chewy candies like Mild Duds, Dots, Sugar Babies Safer alternatives 🍫Chocolate candy without nuts like Hershey bars, Kit Kats, or Reese’s cups 🚨For severe allergies, like peanuts or tree-nuts, always check manufacturer labels to ensure they were produced in a nut free facility. If labels are unavailable for any candy, we recommend not giving it to your child and looking for alternatives. ‼️Disclaimer: This is not medical advice, just suggestions from Princess Donut (AKA OT Mrs. Whitlie), who wants you to have the best Halloween ever! 🥳👻🎃 #youknowhowIfeelaboutchokingcarl #mongoisappalled #dungeoncrawlercandy #hoggtherapypediatrics #happyhalloween

OT Ms. Lauren hosted a special, Spooky Season-themed craft night at our Richmond Clinic for the HTP team earlier this week! 🎃👻 Attendees got to make their own Kinusaiga art pieces to take home! 🖼️ Kinusaiga is a Japanese art form that creates beautiful, intricate pictures by fitting small pieces of fabric into grooves cut into a wooden board or foam base, without using needles or sewing. So cool! 🙌 Thank you Lauren for teaching us this amazing art-form! And thanks to HTP for providing pizza & snacks for the crafters! 🐷🍕💕 #hoggtherapypediatrics

This friend is recognizing and discussing different emotional states during OT! 🎃🖍️ He is drawing facial expressions on the pumpkin that correspond with feelings of happiness, sadness, and worry. 😊🥺😬 This activity isn’t just fun - it’s helping this friend to practice identifying emotional states, representing emotions, and building a foundation for emotional regulation. 🥰 These skills all build on each other and can help kiddos and their therapists develop useful coping strategies that they can use in their daily lives. 🙌🐷 #occupationaltherapy #hoggtherapypediatrics #hoggtherapy

Communication doesn’t have to begin with spoken words! 💬 ST Ms. Martina is helping this friend communicate through signing, and she’s learning fast! ✨ If you watch to the end of the video, she signs “more” when asked whether she’d like to continue the activity, which is a big step! 👏 Using signs gives little ones a way to express their wants and needs while they’re still developing spoken language. Why would an OT keep sour candy at her desk?! 🍬👀 In our latest blog post, OT Mrs Abby shares why she keeps sour gum, Warhead chews, Sour Patch Kids, and other tart treats nearby. 🍋‍🟩For some kids (and adults!), BIG sensory input—like a seriously sour Warhead—can help bring attention back to the present, provide oral sensory input, and support regulation. 🧠✨In the post, Abby discusses the many ways families can explore sour sensory input together—from lemon or lime flavors to sour gummies, tart fruit, pickles, or lemonade. 🍋😋 When you are sorting your Halloween candy this year, set aside some of that sour candy for anytime you or your kiddos need a sensory boost! 🍬Read the full blog post at the link in our bio! 🐷💕 #occupationaltherapist #occupationaltherapy #sensorystrategies

OT Mrs. Jen is helping this friend practice her pencil and writing skills! ✍️ While handwriting and pencil skills are covered in the classroom, pediatric OTs can help when a kiddo needs extra support. 💕 An OT looks at things like fine-motor coordination, hand strength, and pencil control to help a child find a grip that makes writing more comfortable and efficient so that they can write with confidence and success! 👏🐷 #occupationaltherapist #finemotorskills #hoggtherapypediatrics

Telling some tall tales about catching big fish during speech with Mrs. Taylor 🤣🐷 They’ve been working on that tricky /sh/ sound together! 🐠 For some kids, “fish” can sound more like “fiss.” Why? Because /S/ is an easier, more familiar sound, while /SH/ requires the tongue to move farther back and the lips to round just a bit differently. So today, we’re talking ALL about fish while practicing that tricky /SH/ sound. 🐟🎣 #speechtherapy #speechlanguagepathologist #hoggtherapypediatrics

This friend loves to start her sessions with OT Mrs. Alyssa with some swinging time! Swinging is great for vestibular input, and it can be a great way to relax before moving on to work on other goals 💕✨🐷#occupationaltherapy #occupationaltherapist #hoggtherapypediatrics

This month on the Hogg Blog: ST Mrs. Taylor has written a post all about customizing AAC devices! 📝🐷 For many families, an AAC (Augmentative and Alternative Communication) device becomes much more than a piece of technology — it becomes a child's voice.💬 Giving children opportunities to personalize their device can help build confidence, encourage independence, and make communication even more meaningful. This post also includes links to an awesome free video resource for families called AAC at Home — a series of short videos that will set you and your family up for success!🏡🙌 Check out the post on our blog — link in profile or in our linktree! 🔗 #hoggtherapypediatrics #speechtherapy

We’re thrilled to welcome Gabby Kirby to the HTP Team! 🐷🎉 Gabby has joined our team as a PRN Physical Therapist in Richmond. Welcome, Gabby! 👏

Who knew drawing letters on a dry-erase table could be part of speech therapy? 💬 ST Mrs. Maya has been working with this friend on connecting letters to their sounds — like seeing “b” and knowing it represents /b/, also known as sound-letter correspondence. 👍 This skill is an important bridge between speech, language, and early literacy. 📝📚 Even if their first answer is wrong, the way a child responds and self-corrects can give the SLP valuable information about how they’re processing what they see and hear.👀🦻 Speech therapy is about so much more than just “saying sounds correctly!” ❤️ #speechtherapy #speechlanguagepathologist #hoggtherapypediatrics

It might look like this friend is just playing with a dollhouse, but this setup is absolutely checking off many OT boxes at the same time! ✅ Sitting in a tall kneeling position to target those pelvic floor muscles ✅ Reaching across from one side of the foam pad to the other encourages her to cross the midline while strengthening bilateral coordination ✅ Using keys or picking up small items engages finger isolation, which is crucial for prewriting strokes Every seemingly small action is working together to achieve big results! 🐷✨That’s part of the magic of occupational therapy! #occupationaltherapy #hoggtherapypediatrics #hoggtherapy

We’re so excited to welcome Bryanna to the team! 👏 Bryanna is our new Clinic Assistant and will be helping keep our Richmond & Berea clinics running smoothly with all things tidying, organizing, cleaning, and keeping our spaces looking their best! 🧹🫧✨Welcome, Bryanna!

During OT with Ms. Aysia, this friend was practicing typing on a laptop to work on fine-motor coordination, hand strength, motor control, and functional keyboarding skills.💻 Somehow, Jimothy the raccoon came up in conversation…so naturally, we had to look him up!🦝 Swipe to see his reaction 😂 OT lesson of the day: Sometimes the best therapeutic activity is the one that gets a kid excited to participate. 💙🐷 #jimothy #occupationaltherapy #hoggtherapypediatrics

The words we use around mealtimes can make a bigger impact than we realize. 💕 We were reminded of this recently through a pretty amazing feeding therapy moment. A couple of weeks ago, this friend would ONLY eat McDonald’s fries — never trying waffle fries or any other category ❌ Yesterday, he and his SLP, Mrs. Megan, heated up curly fries in the air fryer — seasoning and all! 😍 And guess what? He liked them! He and Mrs. Megan even passed the curly fries around to other kiddos at the clinic and encouraged them to try them, too. 🥹 That’s the kind of progress that can happen when we give kids opportunities to explore food without pressure, celebrate the small steps, and leave room for curiosity. 🔎 When a child hears themselves described as a “picky eater” over and over, that label can start to feel like part of who they are. And as parents and caregivers, we are some of their most trusted people. What we say to and about them matters.🗣️ So instead of focusing on what they won’t eat, let’s look for the positives we can celebrate: ✨ “You’re being so brave trying that!”
✨ “You’re doing a great job chewing!”
✨ “You’re exploring a new food!”
✨ “You’re listening to your body!” And if your child doesn’t like something? That’s okay, too. We can make room for preferences without making them feel like a problem. Mealtimes don’t have to be perfect, and neither do we. Feeding challenges can take time, patience, and support — and you don’t have to figure it all out on your own. If you need support or have questions about your kiddo’s eating habits, we’re here to help!🐷💕 #feedingtherapy #speechtherapy #occupationaltherapy #hoggtherapypediatrics

✨Milestone Moment ✨This sweet friend got his first haircut and didn’t shed a single tear! 🎉✂️ For some kids, something as simple as having their hair cut can feel incredibly overwhelming. His OT, Ms. Kaylee, has been working with him on building tolerance for having his head touched, and all of that hard work has finally paid off. 🥹💕 A first haircut might not sound like a big deal to everyone—but for him, it was a BIG victory, and you better believe his OT was celebrating right alongside him. 🥳 This is why we celebrate progress, no matter how big or small!🐷 #playlearnachieve #occupationaltherapy #hoggtherapypediatrics

We are so excited to welcome TWO new team members this week: Kennedy & Jessica! 🙌🐷 Kennedy is our new Referral Intake coordinator, and Jessica is joining the Billing Team to assist with Patient Access Billing Verification! We’re so glad to welcome them to the Hogg Therapy family! #hoggtherapy #hoggtherapypediatrics

While playing the xylophone outside, Mrs. Georgia asks this friend to describe what he’s doing. Instead of simply asking, “What are you doing?”, she makes it playful: “Caleb is… eating bugs!” 🐛 or “Caleb is… going to sleep!” 😴 These playful moments create opportunities to listen, process language, and practice responding—all without making therapy feel like a test. Sometimes progress isn’t an immediate verbal response. Sometimes it’s understanding, connection, confidence, and engagement. 💕🐷✨ #speechtherapy #hoggtherapy #hoggtherapypediatrics #speechlanguagepathology

Parents, have you ever wondered, “Is my child on track with their developmental milestones?” 💭 Our Developmental Screening Tool is a quick, easy resource for families with children ages 0–6. No judgment. Just a helpful starting point for understanding your child’s development. Find it in the link in our bio or linktree! 🔗 #pediatrictherapy #developmentalmilestones #hoggtherapypediatrics

Just want to give a little shoutout to HTP’s owners 🥰🐷 (We had a leadership rally last night and were able to get them to pause for a photo 😂) They are huge advocates for the kiddos who are cared for here at Hogg Therapy and for everyone who makes up our workforce. We’re grateful for you and appreciate everything you do behind the scenes! 🙌💕

An “obstacle course” can be doing SO much more in OT than you might realize! 🤯 It might look like this kiddo is simply working on balance and coordination, but an OT can use the activity to work on motor planning, body awareness, visual-motor skills, attention, following directions, sequencing, sensory processing, executive functioning—and so much more. ⚖️✨“Step on green!” isn’t just about finding the green item that’s next in the sequence. The child has to look, listen, process the direction, figure out where their body needs to go, plan the movement, and then execute it.🌈 It’s basically sneaking a whole bunch of therapy goals into one fun activity. 💕 Sometimes what looks like “just play” has a LOT of thoughtful therapeutic work happening underneath it! 🐷 #occupationaltherapy #hoggtherapy #hoggtherapypediatrics #playlearnachieve

The HTP team had a tie-dye party during lunch recently! 🌈✨ So much fun! 🥳🎨🐷

Watching speech therapy in action with ST Mrs. Charlotte! 🗣️✨Today’s “labeling” activity looks simple — name the animal, say the word, practice that final sound — but it’s actually working on word retrieval, sound awareness, speech production, and putting those skills together. 🐝🐱🐻 Little cards, lots of repetition, and some very important final sounds! 💬👏🐷 #speechtherapy #speechlanguagepathologist #hoggtherapypediatrics #hoggtherapy

This sweet friend has been making huge strides in therapy recently! 💪✨ ST Mrs. Morgan, OT Mrs. Alyssa, and OT Mrs. Abby (pictured here) have been working together as a team to support her in reaching her goals! 🙌 Here’s what her mom had to say about her progress so far: “Since starting Hogg, Effie has blossomed into her own path. Within the last year her speech has doubled and we can properly understand her now. She's also successfully tried multiple new foods in the last couple months, things that I thought she'd never try, let alone enjoy so much we have it almost weekly. I couldn't even form the right words to say thank you to everyone who’s worked with my little girl. I can't wait to see what other progress she makes in the future!” 🥹 We’re so proud of Effie and look forward to seeing her continue to play, learn, achieve! 🐷🎉 #occupationaltherapy #speechtherapy #hoggtherapypediatrics #playlearnachieve

OT Mrs. Dusty is helping this friend to practice using both hands and boost his fine motor control! 🧱 They’re also working on turn-taking, which might sound like a simple concept—but there’s so much more happening underneath! 🐷 In this session, Mrs. Dusty was intentionally voicing whose turn it was, helping the child take a short pause and better understand the pattern. That simple back-and-forth is building impulse control, attention, communication, flexibility, regulation, and social participation—all through play. Sometimes the “game” is the activity, but the real work is in the skills being built along the way. 🧩✨#playlearnachieve #occupationaltherapy #hoggtherapypediatrics

OT Ms. Aysia is helping this friend fine-tune those fine motor skills while encouraging choice-making by using his AAC device! 👍💬 AAC devices are so much more than a way to communicate—they’re a bridge that helps therapy teams work together. 🤝 When occupational therapists, speech-language pathologists, physical therapists, teachers, and caregivers all use a child’s AAC system during everyday activities, communication becomes part of every goal. Whether a child is requesting a turn on the swing in OT or practicing social interactions in speech therapy, the same communication tools support success across settings. Collaboration across disciplines creates more opportunities for meaningful communication, reinforces skills throughout the day, and helps children build confidence using their AAC device in real-life situations. 🙌🐷 #occupationaltherapy #hoggtherapypediatrics #aacdevice
