It’s time for another AAC success story!?? Meet Mikey-J, a joyful and resilient 4-year-old who is already showing incredible progress with his Tobii Dynavox AAC device! Diagnosed with autism, Mikey-J began using his speech generating device around a year and a half ago, and what a difference it has made.? One of the first breakthrough moments came when Mikey-J used his device to say “bite bite”—letting his family know he was hungry. Before AAC, this would often lead to tears and frustration as his family tried to guess what he needed. That small but powerful phrase opened a big door to clearer communication and more peaceful daily routines. With the consistent support of his therapists Mrs. Megan, Mrs. Taylor, and Mrs. Emily, and a lot of encouragement at home, Mikey-J is now using his AAC device to express his basic needs—a huge step toward independence and connection. His family’s message for other parents just beginning their AAC journey? “Don’t get discouraged. The more you work with your child, the more they will like it and be willing to use it!” ♥️ We are so proud of Mikey-J and the progress he’s making. It’s time for another AAC success story!?? Meet Darren, a bright and determined 6-year-old who has been making incredible progress with his Tobii Dynavox AAC device. Diagnosed as autistic and nonverbal, Darren is an AAC communicator and uses some sign language. Darren began his AAC journey around 6 months ago—and the growth since then has been truly inspiring. One of Darren’s first big breakthroughs came during feeding therapy, when he used his AAC to choose a body part—like his nose or lips—to touch a new food to. With the support of his occupational therapist, Mrs. Jen, he even started counting food items using the number keyboard, making the experience fun and engaging. That moment showed just how much potential his AAC device had to support not only communication, but learning and confidence too.♥️ With daily encouragement at home and the steady support of his therapists, Darren now uses his AAC to express emotions, participate in classroom activities, and make choices throughout the day. He loves the number and letter keyboard, and thanks to his AAC, he can now identify all his letters, colors, and even write numbers up to 20!? Darren’s family wants other parents starting their AAC journey to know: “It may feel overwhelming at first, but it’s so worth it. Stick with it and trust the process—watching your child communicate without frustration is the best reward.” We’re so proud of Darren and all that he’s accomplished. Diagnosed as autistic and non-verbal, Eli has been using his AAC device for just under a year now — and in that short time, he’s started using it to express real needs and emotions. Whether he’s telling his mom when he’s hungry, choosing his favorite foods and drinks, or letting his therapist know what he’s feeling or what he wants to play with, Eli is learning that his voice matters. ??️ One unforgettable moment? Eli walked up to his mom, smiled, and pressed the “I love you” button several times—then gave her a big hug. Moments like these are what AAC is all about: connection, joy, and being heard. His progress has been supported by dedicated therapists, Mrs. Taylor and Ms. Maya, who helped with the insurance and paperwork process and who help encourage functional use of his device during sessions — and his family has been right there modeling and encouraging AAC use at home. Eli’s mother’s message to other families just starting this journey? “ Go for it. Back with another AAC success story!?? This week, we’re honored to highlight the communication journey of Arthur, a bright and determined 4-year-old AAC user with apraxia of speech. Arthur has been using his Tobii Dynavox device, lovingly named Tobii by the family, for 6 months—and in that short time, he’s already making huge strides in communication, independence, and connection. Thanks to the unwavering support of his therapist, Ms. Rachel, and his mom—an ASL interpreter who models both sign and AAC—Arthur has started using Tobi to express his needs, build sentence structure, and regulate emotions. But one moment in particular stands out as a beautiful win.  While sitting with his mom, Arthur explored his device and slowly typed:
“I love you.”
When his mom asked, “Who?”
He replied: “I love you mom.”  With tears streaming down her face, she hugged him tight and said it back over and over. After years of head nods and silent affirmations, Arthur found his voice—and used it to say what he’s always wanted to share. “Tobi gave my son an avenue to tell me things I know he’s always wanted to say. I am so grateful.” Arthur’s mother’s message to other families just starting this journey? It may feel hard at first, but stick with it. Make AAC part of everyday life and model its use consistently. Be patient—children are sponges and will follow your lead. AAC gives them their own voice, something every child deserves. It takes time, but it’s absolutely worth it! ? AAC isn’t just about technology—it’s about unlocking human connection, pride, and identity. We’re so proud of you, Arthur! Last month, we celebrated National AAC Awareness Month by inviting our families to share their child’s AAC success stories — moments that show just how powerful communication can be in its forms. ?✨ This month, we’re keeping the celebration going by highlighting some of our amazing HTP friends and the incredible progress they’ve made using AAC! ?? Meet Arianna, a determined 3-year-old AAC user who is already making incredible progress on her communication journey! ? Diagnosed with autism, Arianna has been using a TobiiDynavox speech-generating device for around a year and a half — and her progress has been nothing short of amazing. At first, using the device was all about exploring. But then came a breakthrough moment — Arianna began using her AAC with clear meaning behind what she was saying! That moment was a huge win not just for Arianna, but for her entire support team. Whether it’s asking for her favorite toy, joining in daily routines, or expressing herself more fully, AAC is helping Arianna find her voice with the support of her mom and therapists. ? Her mom’s advice for other families starting the AAC journey: 
“Just keep using the device and stay positive—it will help. Stay consistent with using it.”  We’re so proud to celebrate Arianna’s AAC win and can’t wait to see what she communicates next! ? Over fall break, staff member Nicole and her three kiddos visited Give Kids the World Village in Kissimmee, Florida, where they decorated a Hoggy themed Christmas tree for wish kids! ?? Give Kids the World Village is a nonprofit organization in an 89-acre storybook resort for critically ill children. Wish granting organizations such as Make-A-Wish and Dream Factory, with chapters based in Lexington, send many kiddos from Kentucky to experience The Village each year. Run by the generosity of volunteers and charitable donations, it is here that these kids are able to escape the complexities of hospitals and doctors’ offices to experience magical week-long vacations designed with accessibility and life enhancement in mind. Nicole’s daughter, Leorah, was one such kid. Diagnosed with stage 4 cancer at just 6 years old, she was a “wish” recipient at The Village in 2022. Now, Nicole and her kids come back to visit The Village regularly and love to join the other volunteers in serving current wish families facing terminal or life-altering diagnoses.  Thank you, Nicole, for bringing kids the joy of Hogg Therapy Pediatrics all the way to Florida this season! ✨
