Your First Visit Made Easy: What to Expect at Your Child's Initial Evaluation

November 2, 2026

By Becky Holcomb, Patient Access

We know that evaluations can be nerve-racking or stressful at times — especially when it comes to your child's care. We value family and want to make this an easy step forward for you. Below, we will walk through the check-in process, what to bring, how to schedule, and how we can best support your family.

initial evaluation at Hogg Therapy Pediatrics

In our Hoggy Lobby we try to make it fun and entertaining for the kids while they wait! Each of our lobbies includes a mini lending library, where you can find books for any age to read while you wait (you can also donate books anytime 🙂!). The front desk has coloring pages and crayons for the scribblers, upon request. Some of our front desk staff have sensory toys for any child who may need a fidget while waiting.

The therapist will come to the lobby and take you back to the treatment room or to one of our gym areas — whatever is most comfortable for the family.

What the Check-in Process Looks Like

  • The front desk is here to help you on your first and future visits. Our lobby has three iPads that families may check in on if they please.
  • At your first appointment, we ask that you bring a type of identification and insurance card to be scanned onto your file.
  • You will be asked to fill out our new patient Welcome Packet. The therapist will go over this welcome packet in your session to confirm it is completed and to answer any questions. This packet includes important policies along with information on:
  • Insurance and Funding
  • Credit Card Policy (explains how payment will be processed. This section will ask for the last 4 digits of your credit/debit card that you want to use.
  • Attendance Policy
  • Breakdown of our cancellation and no-show/call policy.
  • Discusses other scheduling options if your family is unable to be scheduled ongoing.
  • Sibling Gym Waiver
  • Siblings under the age of five may play in the gym at the discretion of the treating therapist.

What to Expect When the Session is Over

  • When the session is over, your therapist will offer your kiddo a lollipop or sticker for their hard work!
  • Your therapist will walk you to the front desk, we will scan your Welcome Packet into your file and return the original copy to the family.
  • We will confirm your future schedule, and then you are good to go!

Empowering Children to Conquer Their World

At Hogg Therapy, we believe children learn best through play, creativity, and meaningful experiences. Our occupational, physical, speech therapists, and Learning Center staff use engaging activities to help children reach developmental milestones in ways that feel exciting, motivating, and successful. Big progress can come from simple moments, especially when therapy feels fun.

Visit the "What to Expect" page on our website for more information on the first visit, along with insurance coverage and more. Or give us a call at (859)-353-3666 to speak to a member of our team directly.

Coloring is more than just a fun activity, it is a powerful tool therapists use to help children build important developmental skills while keeping therapy engaging and playful. Coloring can support communication, movement, coordination, focus, and creativity all at the same time. Best of all, children often do not even realize how much they are learning because they are having fun! We recently hosted a coloring contest in our clinics, and the kiddos had so much fun showing their creativity! At the end of this post, we've included two coloring page designs that you can download, print, and color at home or on the go!
